World Kitchen - A Singing Chef Restaurant

I often go to the South West. I love the drive, and to end up in Margaret River is always a treat. This weekend I didn’t get so far south, but I did get to a restaurant I’d been meaning to visit for a long, long time. You see, I used to live in Bunbury for a short time and a while back, and the thought of it being blessed with a good Mexican restaurant was simply titilating. So when I heard of “The Singing Chef” I put it on my Bucket List.

The day was quite overcast, which was a shame really, because the view across the estuary is breathtaking. On a clear day, it would be my favourite place to relax with a book and a pair of sunglasses, if really all I wanted to do was to drink coffee and look out at the water.Overcast…but what a view.

Overcast...but what a view.

When I look around I notice the potential.  The location, location, location is perfect…and the staff either get paid really well, or the view is making them feel like a million bucks because all three of them look like they took their happy pills today, and it’s rubbing off on me and my lunch date. With smiles all round, we take a look at the menu.

Chicken Enchilada Lydia Guerrini Masterchef Australia 2012 Absolutely Georgeous

I'm not quite sure this is going to be a Mexican Chicken Enchilada...

I go for the Mexican Chicken Enchilada and my date loves a good Fish & Chips.

Beer Battered Fish & Chips ($19.50)

I was slightly confused when this dish came out. I was expecting a thicker batter, something dry and crispy and certainly battered.  If you like the same battered fish as I do, you might want to try the burger.  The girl behind me ordered it and it looked pretty good.

Perhaps focus on the salad...it was fresh, dry and crispy with just the right amount of dressing.

I must say, I didn’t finish my enchilada.  I peeled back the soft tortilla and I was brought back to the Old El Paso flavours of home style Mexican in a box. The innards were cold which tells me the dish had been pre-prepared, refrigerated and microwaved prior to serving, but the waiter graciously fixed that for me and returned it relatively hot.  However…the cheese was closer to ‘Coon’ in flavour and perhaps less like Monterey Jack and whilst I took a photo of the inside of the Enchilada, I felt it best not to post it here.  For me, I’m not sure I can appreciate an otherwise gloriously caramelised red onion, stirred into in a slightly spicey…but more jar flavoured sweet tomato sauce, then mixed with pan fried cubes of chicken breast.  I’m not sure if my drooping fork recognised any aspect of Mexico in my Enchilada at all.

Long Macciato Lydia Guerrini Masterchef Australia 2012

A pleasant finish with my favourite...A Long Macciato $4.50

Nothing that a good coffee can’t fix! And that was the highlight of the lunch. I’m not surprised, it’s Yahava coffee…one of my favourites.

I opted out of dessert which is a big surprise.  There was Vanilla cheesecake, German Apple Cake, Sticky Date and Gluten Free Orange Cake on offer but I tend to only indulge in anything highly caloric, providing it’s worth the calories.  I really enjoyed my Yahava coffee and the view and next time I’ll bring my sunglasses and a fantastic book.

Thank you for visiting our restaurant I am sorry i was not there personally to supervise your meal. I can assure you that the chicken is marinated and grilled, our enchilada sauce is home made as is our caramelised onion. Sadly Monterey Jack is not somehting Bunbury has too much of. The enchilada you have chosen is a favourite amongst many customers while I personally feel that its more tex mex than Mex. The tacos’ would have been a more authentic choice or the buritto. The lack of melted cheese and the slow roasted adobe pork or twelve hour brisket a much more bona fide Mexican street food. Perhaps next time. The Singing Chef.

Thanks for stopping by. You know what? I value chef feedback and if you read my page on ‘Ethics & Philosophy’ you’ll see how I feel about transparency. You know, I visit Bunbury fairly often so I might just take you up on your offer and try a few of your other dishes you recommend. Stay tuned for future updates ;) and thanks again for sharing. All my food love Lydia xxx
